MINEHEAD MEETING

Minehead Quaker Meeting House

9 Bancks Street

Minehead

Somerset TA24 5DJ

(no correspondence to this address)

Meeting for Worship 10.30 Sunday morning.

The Meeting House is near the library and the town centre. There is street parking and a public car park in Alexandra Road a quarter of a mile away.

Usually between ten and twenty friends gather for Meeting for Worship on a Sunday and our regulars are often boosted by Friends from elsewhere who are holidaying in the area. We don’t have a children’s meeting at present but are happy to make arrangements for children if we know in advance.

After Meeting there is a chance to talk with members over tea and biscuits. Several times in the year some will stay on for a shared lunch and talk or discussion. Groups meet in the homes of members from time to time as well. There is a library in the Meeting House with a good selection of books about Quakerism and other subjects that can be borrowed.

Please telephone 01643 704779 with any queries.

Banner to commemorate Slave Trade Abolition

The 25th March 2007 marks 200 years to the day that a Parliamentary Bill was passed to abolish the slave trade in the British colonies.

A banner commemorating this event has been made by some Minehead Quakers who chose words to represent the human right to a life of freedom and then made panels to illustrate them. An embroidered section is based on pictures drawn by children to show some of their favourite activities which would have been denied to children in slavery.

200 years on many forms of slavery still exist. It is hoped that the banner will help people want to work for freedom and human rights today.

The project was the idea of Angela Birch of Watchet and will normally be displayed in the Quaker Meeting House in Bancks St, and postcards of it will be for sale from ‘Under the Rainbow’ shop in Friday Street, Minehead.

The Work that Reconnects is an experiential workshop developed by ecologist and environmental activist Joanna Macy (www.joannamacy.net), who sees our turbulent times as offering an opportunity for a 'Great Turning' in which we can choose sanity and life over the madness of unsustainable exploitation of the planet. The Work that Reconnects has helped many thousands of people around the world to find insight, support, and the courage to act. Its range of powerful transformational practices, many based in Zen, Tibetan Buddhist and Native American traditions, can enable us to reaffirm our sense of purpose and our gratitude for life, so we can turn our concern for the world into collaborative, constructive action.

The workshop will give us an opportunity to:

☼ Explore our feelings of concern for planetary issues

☼ Connect with ourselves, each other and the natural world

☼ Find ways forward towards a sustainable future

The workshop will be facilitated by Fran Hicks and Sally Lever.
