News in Brief

  • Quakers in West Somerset are considering if we can register one or any of our Meeting Houses for registering civil partnerships, in response to recent changes in legislation. Nationally in 2009 Quakers agreed the principle of equality in marriage for same sex and opposite sex couples, whether in civil or religious ceremonies. This step along the way is seen as an advance towards this goal.

  • We are also considering the redevelopment of Taunton Meeting House. It is a good town centre site but the building is in need of up dating. Taunton Friends are consulting their hirers as to their needs and ideas.

  • Nationally we are looking carefully at how to "speak out in the World" using the various new media, without compromising our integrity. We have no Pope or Bishops to speak on our behalf. How do we identify who may speak for us? What events need to be responded to quickly and which will need care and mature reflection? The Epistle on Occupy London SX, was one example of the quick response.

  • Our theme for Yearly Meeting in London in May is Economic Justice and Sustainability, carrying on from last year when we made a commitment to shrinking our carbon footprint.
