Purple Field Productions

Ilminster Quakers support a film company! Our Friend Elspeth Waldie was struck with this bright idea some years ago after working with Valerie Taylor at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Bangladesh. They recognised the potential of film as a medium for providing information and giving a voice to marginalised groups in developing countries. Such countries need films in their own cultures and languages and idioms not the sort that developed countries think is good for them; public interest films, documentaries and dramas about their own concerns such as tackling HIV-AIDS, changing attitudes to disability, etc.

However such films are expensive to make and distribute and often cannot be afforded by the communities that need them most. Elspeth also realised that there are many young film makers in this country seeking to build up their own portfolios. Why not get the two together? Why not make the films entirely with volunteers to cut the costs to a minimum? Purple Field Productions was born and has gone from strength to strength.

Elspeth and her team spend a good part of the year in the field; Cambodia, Bangladesh, Malawi and Rwanda are some of the most recent locations. She is very happy to give talks and show films to any group that might be willing to support the work. Contact her at elspeth@purplefieldproductions.org.uk or phone01460 54142. Ilminster Quakers are holding an exhibition, entitled

A Nonviolent Response to Terrorism,

at the Glade Centre in Frog Lane.

The exhibition, held to mark 350 years of Quaker concern for peace, will include a display of posters from the Bradford Peace Museum, examining the place of nonviolence in tackling terrorism.

There will also be information on the work of Quaker Peace and Social Witness, a Quaker committee which promotes social justice, religious tolerance and non-violent responses to terrorism worldwide, as well as a range of free materials offering further information on Quakers and the Quaker response to peace.

The exhibition opens at 10 a.m. on 6th October and ends at 4 p.m. on 8th October. Quakers will be on hand to answer any questions. Entry is free and refreshments will be available for a small donation.
